Teffont Garden Club welcomes members from all the surrounding villages - anyone who likes gardening or visiting gardens can come and enjoy what we do. We go on expeditions (two or three a year) and have talks in the Village Hall (four or five times a year). In the past we have been to Highgrove, Harold Peto garden at Iford and Cothay Manor garden in Somerset, 'the Sissinghurst of the South West', as seen on County House Rescue. Recently we visited Kapunda hellebore collection near Bath, and Chiff Chaffs, a cottage garden near Gillingham which was laid out and is still run by the legendary Mr Potts.
We try to find beautiful and unusual gardens to visit and we usually have a private tour. We have talks on a variety of topics – we have learned about growing peonies, hellebores and herbs, as well as various kinds of fruit trees, and about woodland gardening from Kevin Hughes who runs Heale House plant centre. We have also held our very own Gardeners' Question Time, which was extremely informative. Our meetings in the Village Hall are usually preceded with a glass of wine and a chance to chat with other members. We have an annual dinner where members get together at a local restaurant, and the year culminates with a Christmas Quiz and supper in the Village Hall which includes an auction of home-made Christmas decorations and raises money for local charities.. We are not all expert gardeners – we just share a love of gardens and a curiosity to learn more, and we are a very active and sociable club.
Subscription rates for 2016 remain the same at £10. We have a healthy membership of some 60 members but we are always looking to increase our membership and welcome more members from all the surrounding villages.
