Desmond Shawe-Taylor became Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures in 2005, having been Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery for many years, and has published several books, including Genial Company: the theme of genius in 18th century British portraiture and The Conversation Piece: scenes of fashionable life.
