Save the Teffont Spire Appeal

Accessed via a stone bridge over a stream, the church is the product of the inspiration of previous generations and is a physical representation of the history of England.  It has many fascinating stories to tell with connections to The Reformation, Dissenters, Civil War, the restoration of the Monarchy and various wars. However, it now stands at a critical juncture. The recent Quinquennial Inspection conducted by the Diocesan Surveyors has identified the need for a significant programme of restoration to almost all parts of the building, but most significantly its tower (supporting the spire), ceiling and interior monuments.

The funds needed are significant and we have to do something to secure its long-term future. To see the spire from the Monarch Way at the top of the valley, coming from the A303 is to know home is close; to walk around the village is to immerse oneself in a place that has not changed for hundreds of years, passing alongside the Teff, the thatched cottages and Home Farm to Teffont House and Teffont Manor.

So, the community of Teffont has decided to campaign to raise the funds – in the region of £300-500,000 on early estimates – to enable this beautiful and historic church to be restored as an iconic element of the landscape in which we all live.

A Project Group, the Friends of St Michael and All Angels, has been formed which has the role of raising the necessary finance, managing the restoration and ensuring the church is prepared for the next 100 years. They will need significant support both to manage the workload involved in delivering the restoration programme but also financially to raise the funds required and bid for help from a range of charities.

So, we hope you might take a moment perhaps to visit the church, to offer your help and to donate to the campaign “Save the Teffont Spire”. We would be immensely grateful for any help you may be able to give.
